Shares in Twitter were up 6% on Monday, yet even with that boost they were still worth less than half of what they were worth a year ago. “The use of debt rather than stock will reassure those that worry this is another sign of a market top, and will have the added benefit of raising the prospect of a buyer for Twitter,” said Chris Beauchamp, senior market analyst at IG. The deal heightened expectations of more tech mergers to come. “With this deal lightening Microsoft’s coffers to the tune of $26bn, make that an exodus of biblical proportions.” “Shares in Microsoft were understandably suspended from trading in the lead-up to this bit of news, given that the traditional reaction to such an announcement often involves a shareholder exodus from the predator,” pointed out Augustin Eden, research analyst at Accendo Markets, who described LinkedIn as “professional networking/dating/narcissism website”. Hoffman’s share - about 10.9% of the company outstanding shares - was worth more than $2.69bn (£1.89bn).Įven as LinkedIn shares soared on the announcement, Microsoft shares are expected to take a bit of a beating in the near future. The deal, which has already been approved by the two companies’ boards, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.Īfter the deal was announced on Monday, LinkedIn was valued at $24.68bn (£17.34bn). Weiner added that the “relationship with Microsoft, and the combination of their cloud and LinkedIn’s network … gives us a chance to change the way the world works.” Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn’s co-founder and controlling shareholder, described the deal as “a re-founding moment” for the company. SLiMs are first presented in a table and when activated all instances of that SLiM are highlighted, thus displaying the distribution of the SLiM. SLiMScape presents an interactive view of results within a protein interaction network. This functionality is implemented using SLiMSearch. Disorder and conservation masking are used to reduce the number of false positives. This is especially useful when trying to find new instances of a SLiM found using SLiMFinder and can also be used to search for a user defined SLiM. New instances of a motif can be located using regular expression matching. Protein sets can also be created manually, allowing for many custom strategies for finding motifs. This is useful when searching for self interacting proteins and other sequences which bind to a domain. The “Batch Domains” selection method creates sets of proteins which contain a particular domain, while “Batch Domains Interactions” creates sets of proteins which interact with a particular domain. A useful example is subcellular location, which can be used to find subcellular targeting motifs. Another selection method named “Attribute” creates protein sets based on a user-defined attribute. Since, in a large network, this can be computationally demanding selection methods include carrying out a single search across a set of selected nodes, specified interactively through Cytoscape’s interface. Figure 1 shows the results of this method on a network consisting of Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen (PCNA) and its interactors. This will iteratively create protein sets containing each protein (hub) and its interactors (spokes). For example, SLiM-mediated interactions can be discovered using the “Batch Interactions” selection method. A variety of node selection methods are provided to automatically select protein sets and different types of motif can be targeted depending on this selection process. SLiMScape uses SLiMFinder to locate statistically over-represented sequences within sets of proteins, defined by selecting subsets of a protein interaction network. An important feature is the visualization of results within a protein interaction network and in the context of domains in nearby proteins. The second, SLiMSearch can find new instances of known or potential motifs within the same network. SLiMFinder has previously been demonstrated as a suitable tool for mining the human interactome for SLiM mediated interactions. The first, SLiMFinder, is capable of finding novel motifs by analyzing a protein interaction network. SLiMscape consists of two primary analysis tools. Cytoprophet, another Cytoscape plugin, predicts domain and protein interaction networks however SLiMScape is the first to focus on SLiMs. Both novel and known motifs can be detected, providing a powerful tool for exploration and analysis of SLiMs within a protein interaction network. We have developed SLiMScape, a plugin which uses two of these tools to add SLiM discovery and search functionality to Cytoscape. Several predictive tools using many different methods have been developed to identify SLiMs. These often occur in intrinsically disordered regions and are involved in a number of functions such as binding, cleavage, subcellular targeting and post translational modifications. Many of these interactions occur between large globular domains but an estimated 15 - 40% are mediated by functional microdomains, of 3 - 10 amino acids in size called Short Linear Motifs (SLiMs). However, most of these experiments do not indicate the mechanism of interaction. High throughput experiments have greatly increased the number of known protein-protein interactions in the human interactome. This significantly aids in the discovery of novel short linear motifs and in visualizing the distribution of known motifs. SLiMScape provides a platform for performing short linear motif analyses of protein interaction networks by integrating motif discovery and search tools in a network visualization environment. To facilitate this SLiMScape automatically retrieves domains for each protein. The distribution of discovered or user-defined motifs may be selectively displayed and the distribution of protein domains may be viewed simultaneously. Data is presented using Cytoscape’s visualization features thus providing an intuitive interface for interpreting results. We present SLiMScape, a Cytoscape plugin, which enables both de novo motif discovery and searches for instances of known motifs. Cytoscape provides a visual interface for protein networks but there is no streamlined way to rapidly visualize motifs in a network of proteins, or to integrate computational discovery with such visualizations. Computational protein short linear motif discovery can use protein interaction information to search for motifs among proteins which share a common interactor. In the situation where you cannot install OS X 10.8 or later, don't worry: you can install older CUDA releases. If you don't, you can download Mavericks (OS X 10.9) from the App Store, which is free. If you want to install CUDA 6.0 on a Mac you need to have OS X 10.8 (Lion) or later running on your computer. System Information - Graphics/Displays Mac OS X Requirements In this case I have two of them and, fortunately, one of them is an NVIDIA. Then look for Graphics/Displays and you will get information on your graphics card, including the name. If you don't know the card/cards available on your Mac, then just go to Application > Utilities > System Information or search for System Information with Spotlight in this way and click on the icon. Choose your operating system (in this case I presume Mac OS X) and then download the package by clicking on PKG. By clicking on this link you will open the download page. The other requirement is to have the CUDA Toolkit, which is free and provides you all you need to install and run CUDA code. The most important one is a CUDA-capable GPU, so you need a recent NVIDIA graphics card. There are some general requirements which are common regardless of the operating system you use. In this guide, I explain how to install CUDA 6.0 (the latest release as I write) on your computer under OS X.įinder menu "GO" General System Requirements What follows are the instructions to install the necessary software to use thousands of "vans" to enhance the performance of your code. This is the main idea about parallel computing. GPU computing is like having hundreds and thousands of skinny guys with old vans, which can be pretty effective. Each of the men is much slower than the strong guy, but if they are able to transport your load concurrently they will have the time to complete the task, have a beer together and come back to their family before the strong guy has done half the work. If you need the work done quickly and have to move a lot of furniture, of course you will chose the second company. What would you prefer? Of course it depends of how much stuff you have to move and how much time you have to do it. The second one instead has 5 normal men available, each of them with a van of average speed. You have two choices: the first company can provide you with the strongest man alive driving the world's fastest van. You have to move to a new town and are looking to hire a furniture mover company. To better explain the key concept behind parallel computing, let me give you a more "realistic" example. I will cover parallel computing in detail in later articles, but if I had to outline in a few words what parallel computing is I would say that it is the partition of repetitive (and therefore often time consuming) tasks into singular tasks, each of which is performed by a single core or processing unit. GPU computing is a new branch of computer science and, more specifically, of parallel computing. CUDA is a proprietary programming language developed by NVIDIA for GPU programming, and in the last few years it has become the standard for GPU computing. In this guide I will explain how to install CUDA 6.0 for Mac OS X. This is the first article in a series that I will write about on the topic of parallel programming and CUDA. Apps That Pay You FAQs Top Money-Making Apps in Canada This is why oxygen masks become essential. In comparison, during any maneuvering, modern fighter pilots deal with 9G, or approximately 2,000 pounds of crushing gravity that makes it almost impossible to draw breath. You may recall the pressure that pushed you into the seat and made it hard to move or breathe. For reference, if you have ever done a loop on a roller coaster, you have likely experienced 2 or 3G. This is what happens when pilots do those amazing tricks and spin out of the way of enemy fire in the movies. In addition, G-force, or the acceleration we feel due to the force of gravity, puts added pressure on the pilot’s body. However, the problem is that even with the most advanced systems, the changes are still not enough to offset the loss of oxygen in the atmosphere at high levels. This means that as the aircraft climbs and descends, the pressure inside the cockpit changes. Nowadays, most fighter jets have a dynamic pressurization system. This means that, for single seat aircrafts like the ones Maverick frequents, hypoxia’s final symptom, loss of consciousness, can be deadly. For fighter pilots in particular, confusion can make taking simple steps such as recalling emergency training, checking the oxygen supply or dropping to a lower atmospheric level, hard to think through. Left unchecked, this can rapidly lead to confusion and eventually loss of consciousness. The first symptoms are tingling in fingers and toes, followed by light-headedness and mild euphoria. For most people, this occurs around 10,000 feet above sea level. |
